Buttonbush is a deciduous shrub native to most of the contiguous United States, though it is absent from the Pacific Northwest and parts of the West. A member of the coffee family (Rubiaceae), it typically grows in USDA hardiness zones 4–9.

Buttonbush thrives in full sun to partial shade and in medium to wet soils. It can tolerate flooding and shallow standing water for short periods, but it does not do well in dry conditions. In the wild, it is often found in thickets, low woodlands, swamps, and along streambanks. Older shrubs may develop numerous branches and twisted trunks (see photos). Its tolerance for wet soil makes it a good choice for rain gardens and wetland restoration projects.

Growing up to 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide, this striking shrub attracts a variety of wildlife. Its distinctive flowers form small, round clusters with protruding anthers, giving the plant its name. The tiny white flowers bloom throughout the summer and attract many bees and butterflies, including swallowtails. The fruiting heads persist through winter and provide food for waterfowl and shorebirds. While the flowers and seeds are eaten by wildlife, the foliage is poisonous to livestock and other animals.
