why are native plants so important?

Native plants are essential in the Southeast United States because they are uniquely adapted to the region’s climate, soils, and seasonal rainfall patterns, which allows them to thrive with less water and maintenance than nonnative species. Their deep roots stabilize soil and reduce erosion during heavy storms and hurricanes, while native trees, shrubs, and grasses provide critical habitat and food sources for local wildlife—pollinators, birds, and soil organisms—that have coevolved with these plants. Using native vegetation also helps control invasive species, supports healthier water cycles by improving infiltration and filtration, and preserves regional biodiversity and cultural landscapes that are central to the Southeast’s ecosystems and resilience.
